A new Oberonia species, O. muthikulamensis (Orchidaceae), is described and illustrated from Muthikulam forest, Western Ghats of Kerala, India. It is compared with a closely morphologically similar species, O. sebastiana, endemic to Western Ghats.

The use of individual-based models in the study of the spatial patterns of disturbances has opened new horizons in forest ecosystem research. However, no studies so far have addressed (i) the uncertainty in geostatistical modelling of the spatial relationships in dendrochronological data, (ii) the number of increment cores necessary to study disturbance spatial patterns, and (iii) the choice of an appropriate geostatistical model in relation to disturbance regime. In addressing these issues, we hope to contribute to advances in research methodology as well as to improve interpretations and generalizations from case studies. We used data from the beech-dominated Žofínský Prales forest reserve (Czech Republic), where we cored 3020 trees on 74 ha. Block bootstrap and geostatistics were applied to the data, which covered five decades with highly different disturbance histories. This allowed us to assess the general behavior of various mathematical models. Uncertainty in the spatial patterns and stability of the models was measured as the length of the 95% confidence interval (CI) of model parameters.According to Akaike Information Criterion (AIC), the spherical model fitted best at the range of ca. 20 m, while the exponential model was best at the range of ca. 60 m. However, the best fitting models were not always the most stable. The stability of models grew significantly with sample size. At <500 cores the spherical model was the most stable, while the Gaussian model was very unstable at <300 cores. The pure nugget model produced the most precise nugget estimate. The choice of model should thus be based on the expected spatial relations of the forest ecosystem under study. Sill was the most stable parameter, with an error of ±6–20% for ≥1110 core series. By contrast, practical range was the most sensitive, with an error of at least ±59%. The estimation of the spatial pattern of severe disturbances was more precise than that of fine-scale disturbances. The results suggest that with a sample size of 1000–1400 cores and a properly chosen model, one reaches a certain precision in estimation that does not increase significantly with growing sample size. It appears that in temperate old-growth forests controlled by fine-scale disturbances, it is necessary to have at least 500 cores to estimate sill, nugget and relative nugget, while to estimate practical range at least 1000 cores are needed. When choosing the best model, the stability of the model should be considered together with the value of AIC. Our results indicate the general limits of disturbance spatial pattern studies using dendrochronological and geostatistical methods, which can be only partially overcome by sample size or sampling design.

Aim We investigated how Pleistocene refugia and recent (c. 12,000 years ago) sea level incursions shaped genetic differentiation in mainland and island populations of the Scinax perpusillus treefrog group. Location Brazilian Atlantic Forest, São Paulo state, south‐eastern Brazil. Methods Using mitochondrial and microsatellite loci, we examined population structure and genetic diversity in three species from the S. perpusillus group, sampled from three land‐bridge islands and five mainland populations, in order to understand the roles of Pleistocene forest fragmentation and sea level incursions on genetic differentiation. We calculated metrics of relatedness and genetic diversity to assess whether island populations exhibit signatures of genetic drift and isolation. Two of the three island populations in this study have previously been described as new species based on a combination of distinct morphological and behavioural characters, thus we used the molecular datasets to determine whether phenotypic change is consistent with genetic differentiation. Results Our analyses recovered three distinct lineages or demes composed of northern mainland São Paulo populations, southern mainland São Paulo populations, and one divergent island population. The two remaining island populations clustered with samples from adjacent mainland populations. Estimates of allelic richness were significantly lower, and estimates of relatedness were significantly higher, in island populations relative to their mainland counterparts. Main conclusions Fine‐scale genetic structure across mainland populations indicates the possible existence of local refugia within São Paulo state, underscoring the small geographic scale at which populations diverge in this species‐rich region of the Atlantic Coastal Forest. Variation in genetic signatures across the three islands indicates that the populations experienced different demographic processes after marine incursions fragmented the distribution of the S. perpusillus group. Genetic signatures of inbreeding and drift in some island populations indicate that small population sizes, coupled with strong ecological selection, may be important evolutionary forces driving speciation on land‐bridge islands.

Seasonal activity of the loiasis vectors Chrysops dimidiata Wulp and Chrysops silacea Austen (Diptera: Tabanidae) was studied during 1987-89 in villages and surrounding forest of the Chaillu Mountains, Congo. Chrysops were captured mainly in the hot rainy season (November-May) and densities of both species were higher in the forest than in villages. C.silacea predominated at all sites and C.dimidiata was rarely found in villages. In the rain forest, between 07.00 and 18.00 hours, 12 times more C.silacea and 3 times more C.dimidiata were collected with hand-nets (range 15-81 per man-day) than were caught in landing/biting collections on human bait. Chrysops man-biting rates were higher in villages closer to the forest, but variations in loiasis prevalence among villagers (microfilaraemia rates 16-37%) were not proportional to the intensity of contact between people and vectors in the villages, indicating that the majority of loiasis transmission probably occurs when people go into the forest.
